“OPEN UP THE DOOR OF YOUR HEART AND FIND ENLIGHTENMENT.”

Open Your Heart

Built among the fields in Yilan, Open Yourself is a place taking care of people’s hearts. Here, you will have a chance to open your heart, wake up the inner self, discover the essence of life and realize what you really want. But first, you need to be willing to open your heart, even if it means opening the wounded heart—which will hurt like having an operation without anesthetic—and touching the deepest wound. What follow the pain, though, will be endless joy, satisfaction and reward.

Simply Sharing Souls

As you walk through the gates which lead toward the heart, you will see an elegant house surrounded by the quiet and beautiful lake. There is no hard wall, only a view of endless fields. You can walk in the corridor of the main building at leisure, pick up a seat facing the lake wherever you like and admire the wooden stage in the middle of the lake. Your mind will calm down along with the breeze.

Do not shun away from this wonderful place simply because it is said to be a Buddhist monastery; it is only because Zhi De, a nun and the key figure of Open Yourself, believes in Bodhisattva and planned every corner according to the ten stages before becoming a Buddha, reminding people to keep learning. If you put the religion aside, this is just a place for you to dine, drink tea and share your soul with the nun, the staff and even other guests.

Enrich Your Soul

The founder of Open Yourself, Zhi De, said she is willing to share an easy, comfortable and tranquil spiritual feast with more people, because what everyone has gone through, she has experienced as well. She is now 66 years old, but it wasn’t until 41 that she became a nun. During 1960s, she worked for a bank which earned a lot for her and was considered a stable job; she later worked for clothing factory, building company, trading company, special education school, tea house, Japanese restaurant, suicide prevention lifeline association and many more. She had married and had children. Only until she became a nun did she realize that what she had gone through was preparing her for what she is doing now. In 1999, she helped to open a 3Q mental and physical reconstruction course in the most devastated area of the 921 earthquake. Since then, she has helped more than 15,000 people. Whether you have problems concerning parent-child or couple relationships, work or life, she can share her experiences and offer practical suggestions.

Learn to Love

Open Yourself offers two special courses called Slow Living, Soul Calming and 5Q: tracking your transformations; the former charges NT$2,200 a day while the later only requires guarantee money which will be refunded once you finish the two-day course. You will become peaceful when entering this simple yet elegant surroundings, being around Zhi De, you won’t worry about anything else, just let your inner self wake up. Zhi De herself is a person full of harmony and love, leading everyone back to a satisfactory life. Guidance and Silence: Teacher A-Hai, the founder of Möbius Strip Theatre, used to be actor and director and had worked in Utheatre for nine years. With years of practices, he has excellent body flexibility and thinks one has to learn arts through practices like breathing, meditating and calming. In 1999, A-Hai met Zhi De when he offered help in the 921 earthquake. He had benefited greatly by participating in the Tea Zen and 5Q courses in Open Yourself, and thus, he returned to teach two Slow Living, Soul Calming courses: Extraordinary Guidance and Listening to Silence. The former starts with relaxing your body by the guidance of tai chi and mind-calming games; the latter begins by listening to different volume of drum sounds to reach another level of mind-calming.

Silent Tea Party: You can experience the total silent of Tea Zen and the simple sweetness through five rounds of tea tasting, including multiple smelling and tasting alternately, with delicate tea snacks. You will understand how peaceful your mind is when concentrating on one thing and one thing only. The aroma will be more impressive than you experienced before and the flavor will linger on your tongue. You will live in the present through the simple and silent tea party.

Calming Calligraphy: Teacher Yi-Guang, who has 40 years of experience, will share his unbelievable calligraphy skills. When you are doing something, your mind is easy to be unstable, but once you enter the world of calligraphy, everything else fades away as if you and the earth become one. You will start from holding a writing brush, and every movement afterwards will be slow, so you can feel what it is like to write from nothing until each stroke is complete. You will then advance to writing characters with many horizontal and vertical strokes and might even write on high-quality paper before you bring them home as a souvenir.

Heart-clearing Music: Teacher Xian-Zhi Gao is famous for covers of old Taiwanese songs. He will calm your mind by his powerful singing with different instruments. His vigorous interactive teaching method will let you understand silence through sounds. Since melodies are influenced by thoughts, he will sing to your soul with a beautiful timbre closest to that of breathing. The singing will tell you to follow your heart rather than your mind, because their feelings often contradict each other. Listen to Teacher Gao’s music is like going back to your mother’s womb and having the very first peacefulness again.
